ABOUT

The Green Fellowship is a full time undergraduate research fellowship that spans the Spring semester. The fellowship involves hands-on, immersive research experience under the mentorship of the UT Southwestern Graduate School faculty. Now over 15 years old, the Green Fellowship has been an influential and often pivotal experience in a student's professional life.

The program provides students with 3 main areas of growth: developing scientific thought, learning assays/techniques used in research, and scientific communication. Fellows spend 4 months working on a research project in collaboration with a UT Southwestern research laboratory. Students will spend this time performing new assays, learning about new research techniques and when to use them, and spend extensive time in a laboratory setting. Interacting with lab members from all backgrounds and having an experienced mentor allows for students to nurture and develop their skills with scientific questioning and thought. Lastly, the program emphasizes scientific communication. At the end of the fellowship, a poster session allows for students to present their research and fosters the development of being able to communicate science to individuals from all backgrounds.

Starting my career, my research was on the genetic and biochemical regulation of meiosis, particularly in males since they undergo meiosis continually from a renewing stem cell system and produce viable gametes long into old age. My work showed several key genes that regulated different aspects of meiosis that when mutated caused infertility. Several of these have since been found in humans presenting with infertility and two of them seem to be reliable genetic markers that can be used for diagnosis. A key example of how basic research can lead to discoveries that help many many patients. However I have since left the basic research lab and now my research focuses on effective teaching and evaluation of research ethics in the biomedical research setting.

With the support of then Provost Hobson Wildenthal, I initiated Green Fellows program 20 years ago to provide additional opportunities for UTD students to have a significant research experience before graduating from UTD.  Although there are many great research opportunities available to students at UTD, there are many students who simply cannot find a lab or fit research into their busy schedules while taking full-time classes at UTD.  Hence, the idea of getting students completely away from campus for one full semester arose.  In my opinion, the GF program has been an inspiration for so many students while they are choosing a career path.  Whether they go on to medical school or graduate school, the research experience will live with them forever.
