UT Dallas' Undergraduate Research Fellowship

The Green Fellows

INQUISITIVE

Fellows have a deep thirst for knowledge in all forms! During the semester, fellows engage in intensive research under a UT Southwestern faculty member. Most fellows are given their own project, through which their skills shine through. Throughout the experimental process, students are pushed to dig deeper and ask meticulous questions. Fellows use their experimental skills gained in the lab to answer these questions in a methodical way. Inquisitive students are always encouraged to apply. Curiosity makes research possible!

DRIVEN

Being a hardworking scientist is an integral part of research. Students part of the Green Fellowship are no exception. With an intensive research experience like the fellowship, students must be able to channel their motivations when things don't work out. Science is unpredictable and the event of having unstable results or a failed assay is very common. What distinguishes a good scientist is their ability to be able to bounce back and be resilient and to be driven in their endeavors!

COMMUNICATIVE

One of the most important aspects of being a good scientist is the ability to communicate science. Making science accessible to individuals of all backgrounds is vital. Students learn these skills through preparations for their poster presentation. Many labs involved in the program also host weekly meeting where students are encouraged to present their data for the week and ponder further questions regarding their project. Being a scientist encompasses more than research and technical skill! Thus, scientific communication is a central pillar to the Green Fellows program.

ABOUT US

The Green Fellows program is a partnership between UT Dallas and UT Southwestern Medical Center that is in its 17th year. Students from UT Dallas are selected each year to participate in a semester of research at UTSW. Research fellows are matched with faculty at UT Southwestern where many are assigned to work with a mentor on a project in fields such as molecular and cellular biology, neuroscience, physics and computational science, bioengineering, chemistry, and behavioral sciences.

In order to compensate for research expenses and time, the Ida and Cecil Green foundation offers students a $4,000 stipend. No research experience is needed to apply. Selection is based on GPA, application essays, two faculty surveys from UTD professors who can evaluate the applicant for potential in advanced research, and an in-person interview with the program directors. At the end of the program, all students give a poster presentation over their work. The commitment is for one spring semester and students are not allowed to take other classes or hold other jobs.

Green Fellows is a wonderful opportunity for those looking for hand-on training in a lab, or for those who wish to pursue a career as a PhD or MD/PhD.  As an intern at UT Southwestern, you are considered an employee!
